Active Release Technique

What is Active Release Technique?

Active Release Technique (ART) is a highly successful approach to injuries of muscles, tendons, nerves, and the surrounding soft tissues. Active Release uses deep tissue massage to the connective tissues while moving them through their range of motion.

ART is a deep muscle therapy that relieves tension and promotes a fuller range of motion while reducing scar tissue formation, muscle imbalance, and nerve entrapments.

Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons ligaments, and nerves. The provider treats abnormal tissues by combining precisely directed tension and very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols are unique to ART and include over 500 specific moves. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach, and it is complementary to other forms of chiropractic care.

All Chiropractors at Midway Chiropractic are certified annually in Active Release Technique.

The three most common mechanisms of injury are:

  1. Acute trauma
  2. Constant pressure
  3. Repetitive motion

All three mechanisms play a part in the cumulative injury cycle. Soft tissue restrictions in the body change or adapt over time. These changes are predictable and can be felt by the doctor. Chronic or “older” injuries feel different from acute or “newer” ones.

Active Release Technique has proven to be very effective for professional athletes and is widely used in professional sports such as the NFL, NBA, NHL, Ironman triathlons, professional volleyball, figure skating, and many more.
